Smulders & Co
Smulders & Co was a well-known paper merchant, lithographer and publisher of maps which Vincent frequented occasionally from August 1882. The business was located at Spuistraat 55 but also had a warehouse at Laan 3. From time to time, Vincent would visit to rummage through the old stock in the attic for paper suitable for his work. It was also the place where Vincent made his first lithographs in November – December 1882. Inspired by the English graphic artists whose work he saw in popular magazines, he decided to make prints himself. He would ultimately make only nine lithographs and one etching, almost all of them were created in The Hague in 1882.
