On Sunday, 8 June 1873, Vincent went to Box Hill, southwest of London near the town of Dorking, with his boss Charles Obach (1840/41–?). According to Vincent, the hill was
“partly of chalk and covered with box trees, and on one side a wood of tall oak trees.” Read the complete letter
He found the setting beautiful and strikingly different from the Dutch and Belgian landscapes familiar to him.
