When Vincent arrived from Brussels in the village of Patûrage, he received a warm welcome from the businessman Benjamin Vanderhaegen and lived at his house for a few weeks. Vanderhaegen found Vincent accommodation with the farmer Jean Baptiste Denis in the nearby village of Wasmes. There, Vincent took poor care of himself and shunned earthly things to such an extreme degree that Vanderhaegen wrote to Vincent’s parents in February 1879 to express his concerns. He told them Vincent risked losing his preaching position if he did not listen to the advice of many and change his lifestyle.
Nothing more is known about Vincent’s brief encounters with Vanderhaegen.
