Vincent attended Zundert’s village school, which was close to the family home. Since 1861 is the only year for which the student register has been preserved, it is the only year in which we can say for certain that Vincent was enrolled. The school must have been a lively place: all the pupils sat together in one classroom, and there were about 150 of them in winter. The school was quieter in summer, since there was work to be done on the land..
It is not clear whether or why Vincent left school in 1861; if he did, it may have been because his parents thought spending time around working-class children was making him coarse.
After Vincent left school, he probably received tutoring at home from the governess Anna Birnie, with additional lessons from his father.
