Guillaumin’ studio
In Paris, Vincent became friends with the Impressionist Armand Guillaumin (1841–1927), whom he greatly admired as an artist and a person. Vincent regularly visited Guillaumin in his studio at 13 Quai d’Anjou, which had formerly belonged to Charles-François Daubigny. Years later, Vincent reminded Theo of their visit tto the studio:
“Wasn’t it pleasant at Guillaumin’s last winter — finding the landing and even the stairs, not to mention the studio — chock-full of canvases?” Read the complete letter
In December 1887, Theo organised an exhibition of Guillaumin’s art at Boussod, Valadon & Cie, the gallery he managed. Theo also owned works by Guillaumin, including Self-Portrait with Palette and Portrait of a Young Woman. Vincent loved portraits and regarded Guillaumin’s self-portrait as a great achievement. He wrote to his sister Willemien:
“That really gives an idea of what one is searching for.” Read the complete letter
After Vincent went to live in Arles, he continued to receive news of Guillaumin from people including his brother Theo. The friendship evidently endured, for when Vincent visited Paris for the day in July 1890, Guillaumin hoped to see him. Unfortunately, Vincent could not stand the busy city and went back to Auvers-sur-Oise early without meeting his friend.
