Van Gogh in
Streatham Common
On 11 April 1875, Vincent van Gogh drew a view of Streatham Common, a large grassy open space in south with woodlands of oaks and Butcher’s Broom shrubbery. He made the sketch on the title page of a book of poetry by Edmond Roche and sent it to his brother Theo. Unfortunately, the work has since been lost. On the day he made it, the daughter of his landlord John Parker died of pneumonia. Vincent wrote about the park’s appearance:
“It had rained in the night, and the ground was soggy here and there and the young spring grass fresh and green.” Read the complete letter
