During his stay in London, Vincent visited the Royal Academy of Arts several times. The Royal Academy, England’s first art school, not only provided lessons but also staged the annual Summer Exhibition of work by contemporary artists, as it continues to do today. Vincent visited the Summer Exhibition in 1873 and 1874. After the 1874 show, he wrote to his brother Theo about seeing the paintings of the English artist James Tissot (1836–1902). Vincent also attended the Royal Academy’s Winter Exhibition, which was held every year from early January to mid-March. There, he saw works by old masters including Rembrandt (1606/7–1669), Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640), Jacob van Ruisdael (1628/29–1682), Tintoretto (1518–1594) and Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641)
